A joyful creative-writing session for younger learners. Mark will share his Bloomsbury picturebook ‘Rhinos Don’t Cry’ and will share the ways he came up with the books’ most memorable characters. Students explore what makes a great hero as they build character word banks, and create their own illustrated hero using the head–body–feet method.

An energetic writing workshop where students learn how to create monstrous raps packed full of high-status wordplay. They’ll each create a unique 8-line rap or poem from the perspective of their favourite villain. Includes rhyme games, vocabulary building, and a live monster rap from Mark.

The Secret Life of Stuff

A lively writing session where pens, mugs and classroom objects come to life! Mark performs a new poem all about a surprisingly characterful object in his home - one with a very sinister plan. Then students will create personified poems using multisyllabic rhyme, perspective and precise language to uncover each object’s secret identity.

A cinematic workshop blending character and setting. Students build suspenseful descriptions set in an art gallery, experimenting with structure, vocabulary and mood to produce a strong GCSE-ready writing passage.

Join poet and performer Mark Grist for a lively 30-minute poetry performance designed especially for KS1 & KS2 students.
Mark will share a range of his funniest, most memorable poems and raps—packed with rhythm, rhyme and imagination—alongside stories from his life as a published poet.
There’ll be time for students to ask questions via the chat, and the session is perfect for a larger group in a hall or assembly space (though you're welcome to tune in from your classroom if that works better). A brilliant burst of inspiration to get young writers buzzing with ideas.

Throughout the session, Mark highlights the choices poets make to create voice, build tension and land emotional impact, giving students a real insight into the writer’s craft. It’s a fun, engaging way to see the techniques they study in English — imagery, structure, tone, performance, perspective — brought vividly to life.
